Tunisian award winning* blog Nawaat has been named the winner of the Arab eContent Award 2011, in the e-Inclusion & Participation category. Nawaat refuses to attend the Bahrain IT Expo 2011 Opening Ceremony to receive the award from Shaikh Mohammed Bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Information Technology and Communications.

Since the eContent Award is officially sponsored by the Bahraini eGovernment Authority and since Nawaat’s position has always been to avoid any form of support from government organisations, we reject this award in protest against the Bahrain’s Internet filtering practices, the arrest of scores of bloggers and human rights activists and the arbitrary blocking of hundreds of websites and blogs that are critical of the Bahraini government and its ruling family.

Furthermore, the Bahraini eGovernment Authority is not in position to decide or accredit which website is eligible to win the Arab eContent Award 2011, especially under the e-Inclusion & Participation category. Bahrain’s internet freedom situation goes against the very principal of e-Inclusion & Participation.

* In 2011 Nawaat won:

The Reporters Without Borders Netizen Prize 2011 for the crucial role in covering the social and political unrest in Tunisia from the early beginning.
The Index On Censorship New Media Award 2011 for its project TuniLeaks that revealed the extent of the corruption deeply entrenched in many aspects of Tunisian life and for helping informal media networks link communities that had been cut off by government censors.

  With all due respect to NAWAAT, posting an official letter along with personal contact information and names of employees from the organization is not professional at all!! It’s a violation at many levels! You could’ve at least blurred it!

This attitude towards Bahrain is totally unaccepted. This is not a government event but it is a country event. This carries the name of Bahrain. Those who say bravo to you do not love Bahrain and their task is to make the name of Bahrain bad. Irrelevant what people do, Bahrain name should be protected by all of it’s population. I applaud Nawaa on this move in sticking to thier belives and values , but as a Bahraini iam really disppointed.
Just stating the above makes my country look like a vilan which in fact is quiet oppoiste from what is being protrayed especially in the media.
Nawaa i would really like you to look at bahrain first , its people and caliber. Blocking abusive sites is a normal practice in any country , bloggers that claim death and are abusive to citizens is a normal pracitce to be spoken to by authourity. My advise is to come visit bahrain and see the real truth with your own eyes and not listen with your ears. What happened in bahrian is a dirty game and speaking as a REAL BAHRIANI CITIZEN i tell you iam thankful for the security that is back and stable and not destroyed by empty minds and blind people.

En ce qui concerne vos accusations vers Bahrein je suis toute-a fait contre vous. La maniere que vous avez illustrer la situation est inacceptable car Bahrein est un pays qui donne toute liberte aux individus sauf quand cette liberte est abuser par certain. Les evenments du 14 Fevrier a Bahrein n’est pas une revolution legitime comme celle de la Tunisie NON, c’est un coup administrer par des pouvoirs etrangeres destiner a prendre la royaume et puis la region sous leur territoires. Congratulations on the award , hoped that you could come to bahrain to see the real truth but hard luck it will be a loss to see how 2 revoluations totally had a different game.
I really hope that come to see how the government is in real support of democracy , peace and stabibility. we agree in the freedom of speech part but as citizens we cannot be terrorised by blind back stabbing individuals -We r thankful for the security that is back thanks to the government. Personally i hope you can visit and see the truth in your own eyes.

  Our dictature Ben Ali used to say such lies during 23 years, hope that freedom in Arab Gulf countries will let you sooner write your real name Lulwa, i was in your area for long months and i think that repression of minorities there are by far more horrible than this we knew in Tunisia.
  The two or three families ruling each one of these countries and serving US interests are the shame of all the arab world.
  Free Tunisia and Egypt, would better resign from Arab League not to meet with these dictatures.

En ce qui concerne vos accusations vers Bahrein je suis toute-a fait contre vous. La maniere que vous avez illustrer la situation est inacceptable car Bahrein est un pays qui donne toute liberte aux individus sauf quand cette liberte est abuser par certain. Les evenments du 14 Fevrier a Bahrein n’est pas une revolution legitime comme celle de la Tunisie NON, c’est un coup administrer par des pouvoirs etrangeres destiner a prendre la royaume et puis la region sous leur territoires. Your accusations aren’t legitimate, the jury is not in Bahrain and the award is not given to the winners by Bahrain. Bahrain is only hosting the event! Shame on you for ruining our country’s reputation because of a minority attempting by a coup led by foreign powers! Shame on your for supporting vandalism and violating other ppl’s right to freedom! We’ll never share your info”…thats what it says on the top right corner under the email box….. and you just exposed a lady mobile number and some other private information….. besides , which revolution are you supporting in Bahrain ? they have murdered people and tortured many others… they have blocked roads and forced their opinions on others… you have to know that you freedom stops when it invades others… we have lived in fear for a month.. thank god the government had to put an end to that ,…. we expats were threatened day and night by the protesters…

Well its your full right to accept or reject , but not your right to put 2 peoples names & contacts, if i was them i would plan to sue you.
Hard luck , coz you wouldnt have the chance to really see how peaceful bahrain is and how the king was backstabbed by a bunch of blind sidded idiots who are lazy and want everything to come to thier door and never thankful. Its really shameful .

Seriously Nawaa what you did is not professional , at least blur the names or contact the orgnaisors to officially reject.
Moreover as a Bahraini its sad to see orgnaisations such as yourself speak poorly of my beloved country and government. You were not living here and did not see what the so called grieved anti government people were doing. They dug their own grave , i dont know about Tunis but in Bahrain the government was always supportive and doing it utter best to have its citizens live a decent life. Shame on you for defaming my coutnry without any proof other than little puppets acting out horror movies in front on the world. Be professional visit Bahrain see the truth then decide to reject the award.
