Sub-Saharans in Tunisia: The untruths expounded by president Kais Saied

Tunisia’s president has accused civil society of fomenting the country’s colonization by undocumented migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. Kais Saied denounces those who wish to « change the demographic composition » of Tunisia, evoking their « violence and criminality ». His proof? Contacted by Nawaat, the Interior Ministry affirmed that it does not have statistics regarding the number of migrants implicated in criminal activities. A glimpse at the facts exposes the president’s xenophobic fiction for what it is.

Racism and Sub-Saharans in Tunisia: Italian influence or nationalistic lobbying?

Tunisian president’s shocking statement on sub-Saharan Africans in the country sparked xenophobic violence, police arrests, and evictions against them. It reflects Tunisia’s non-receptive migration policies and a security-focused approach. The wave of repression is linked to EU externalization of migration policies, and it is possible that Italian pressure and lobbying by the Tunisian Nationalist Party played a role. In the aftermath of the statement’s release, the Presidency has taken steps to address the criticism that ensued.

النقل بين المدن في تونس: هرسلة بوليسية للتضييق على المهاجرين الأفارقة

منذ أكثر من أسبوع، أجج بيان رئاسة الجمهورية موجة عنصرية مقيتة استهدفت أفارقة جنوب الصحراء، وهي موجة منظمة أطلقها تنظيم عنصري يعرف بالحزب القومي التونسي منذ أشهر. تحريض أدى إلى اقتحام عدد من المساكن التي يقيم فيها أفارقة جنوب الصحراء وحرق أمتعتهم، ووصل الأمر إلى حد تعليق وثيقة في إحدى محطات سيارات الأجرة، تحمل ختم شركة التجديد للخدمات، كُتب عليها ”يُمنع اقتطاع تذاكر للمهاجرين الغير نظاميين ”الأفارقة““.

Tunisian Nationalist Party: Government-authorized racism

A political party recognized by the Tunisian government is openly displaying its xenophobia and rejection of sub-Saharan migrants. « Racism is a heinous crime punishable by the law. This racist discourse includes the incitation of violence and violates the provisions under Article 9 of the law combating racial discrimination », one jurist says. And yet members of the Tunisian Nationalist Party are clearly benefiting from its ins with authorities, even receiving airtime on television.

In a recent video diffused on different social media accounts, including the account of one highly-followed Tunisian Instagram personality, a crowd of Tunisians vehemently protest the presence of sub-Saharan African migrants in the country. The display of unabashed racism, especially by those who insist that their grievances have nothing to do with racial prejudice, is frighteningly familiar.

Parti nationaliste tunisien : Racisme autorisé par l’Etat

Un parti politique reconnu par l’Etat affiche ouvertement sa xénophobie et son rejet des migrants subsahariens. « Le racisme est un crime odieux puni par la loi. Ce discours raciste comprend une incitation à la violence et viole les dispositions de l’article 9 de la loi contre la discrimination raciale », déplore une juriste. Sous surveillance : Témoignage d’une migrante du Sud global en Tunisie

Le 2 juin 2022, trois policiers en civil ont frappé à ma porte dans le quartier de Bab Souika, à Tunis. Ils m’ont demandé de les suivre au poste de police local sans me fournir de raison. A mon arrivée au commissariat, on m’a retiré mon passeport indien et la carte de séjour provisoire que j’avais sur moi. On m’a informée que l’objet de ma convocation était un tweet que j’avais publié la veille.

Migration : Apprentissage de l’allemand en Tunisie, un nouveau visa

Des milliers de Tunisiens apprennent chaque année la langue allemande. Pour la grande majorité d’entre eux, un projet migratoire se profile derrière cet engouement linguistique. En 2020, l’Allemagne a promulgué une loi relative à l’immigration de la main d’œuvre qualifiée, ouvrant la voie aux travailleurs originaires de pays non-européens. A condition de maîtriser l’Allemand. Voici donc les Tunisiens se bousculer pour apprendre la langue de Goethe.

الحزب القومي التونسي: العنصرية الزاحفة بمباركة الدولة

يقود الحزب القومي التونسي، الذي تحصل على رخصة تأسيسه آخر سنة 2018، حملة منظّمة بدأت منذ أكثر من شهرين من أجل طرد المهاجرين أصيلي دول إفريقيا جنوب الصحراء، من الذين لا يملكون وثائق إقامة أو لجوء. جمع هذا التنظيم قرابة ألف توقيع على عريضة، ستوجه إلى السلطات الجهوية والمركزية، تضمنت أربع نقاط وهي ترحيل المهاجرين غير النظاميين وكل مهاجر من أفريقيا جنوب الصحراء يرتكب جريمة في تونس أو “يخل بالأمن العام” وفرض تأشيرة على دول جنوب الصحراء وإلغاء القانون عدد 50 لسنة 2018 المتعلق بمناهضة الميز العنصري.

Under Surveillance: Testimony from a Global South migrant in Tunisia

On 2 June 2022, three police officers in civilian clothes knocked on my door in the Bab Souika neighborhood of Tunis, and asked me to follow them to the local police station without providing any reason. Upon my arrival at the station, my Indian passport and the temporary residence permit (carte de séjour provisoire) that I had carried with me were taken away. I was informed that the subject of my summons was a tweet I had published the day before.

Nawaat Debates #3: Migrants subsahariens en Tunisie, transit ou terminus ?

Pour des milliers de migrants subsahariens aspirant à rejoindre l’Europe, la Tunisie est devenue l’un des principaux pays de transit. Près de 57 mille migrants subsahariens vivent actuellement dans notre pays, selon les estimations du département des affaires économiques et sociales des Nations Unies (UNDESA). Et on compte désormais 4200 demandeurs d’asile et 7000 étudiants originaires d’Afrique subsaharienne, d’après les chiffres officiels de l’Observatoire national de la migration. L’Europe étant devenue une forteresse inexpugnable, avec des restrictions d’accès toujours plus draconiennes, la station Tunis a pris peu à peu des allures de terminus.

جرجيس: حرقة الأهالي تقابلها السلطة بالقمع واللامبالاة

تشهد جرجيس تحركات احتجاجية منذ أكثر من شهرين إثر فاجعة غرق مركب يحمل مهاجرين غير نظاميين، تمّ دفن عدد منهم في مقبرة الغرباء. تنوعت أشكال الاحتجاج بين الاعتصامات والمسيرات الاحتجاجية وإقرار الإضراب العامّ، لمطالبة السّلط المحلّية والجهوية بتحمّل مسؤولياتها. تحركات جوبه بعضُها بالعنف البوليسي. يعود هذا الفيديو على أهم محطات الحراك بجرجيس ومطالبه.
